Mt. Hope boys, girls fall in lacrosse finals

Both bowed out in Division II championship game

They gave it their best, but the Mt. Hope boys’ and girls’ lacrosse teams came up just short in their bids to win state Division II titles this weekend.
The boys fell to Middletown 11 to 9 Saturday, while the girls lost to the Lincoln School, 12-7, Sunday afternoon, ending a season that saw both squads dominate their opponents for much of the year.
For the girls, the loss was almost a one-off, Coach Kerri Ferreira said. The girls didn’t play their best, and Lincoln School was a formidable opponent.
“The girls worked hard and played hard all season. Playing against a private school that should be a Division 1 school kind of stinks, but I told them, ‘You’re going to look back and be proud of what you did this year.’”
This year was defined by strong performances from every player, especially graduating seniors Jenna Cimbron, Grace MoClair, Caroline Parker, Annee Kopecky and Alexandria Reavis. The five were lights out all season, Coach Ferreira said, and “definitely helped put Mt. Hope back on the lacrosse map.”
While Jenna had a good day with three goals and three assists, Coach Ferreira said that overall, it just wasn’t the Huskies’ best performance.
“I don’t think it was,” she said. “Lincoln School was the better team. But I told the girls on the bus, ‘There’s nothing I can say to you that’s going to make you feel better.’ But I wouldn’t want to coach any other team than these girls.”

Boys fall in close contest
The boys’ final was a nail-biter and if things had gone just slightly differently, Coach Jay Spina thinks his squad of talented upper and lower classmen would have squeezed out a victory.
“We had a really good game plan for them,” the coach said. “And in the first half it pretty much worked. I think we were a little energized and the halftime break took a bit of our energy away.”
Tied at 5-5 heading into the half, Middletown came out blazing in the third quarter, scoring five unanswered goals to put them ahead 10-5. But Mt. Hope staged its own comeback and scored three unanswered goals to put the game back within reach.
“We had the momentum and we scored the last three goals with a minute and a half left,” the coach said, but Middletown was able to secure the ball as the remaining time wound down, sealing Mt. Hope’s defeat.
Coach Spina said it was disappointing to lose after such a great season. But he feels great about his team, which had a strong senior contingent and is heavily laden with youngsters who have gone through the Kickemuit Middle School lacrosse program.
“This is the first graduating class that’s come from KMS, and the players are more prepared,” he said. “We start freshmen and sophomores now which was unheard of in the past.”
And predictions for the coming year?
“We have the pieces put in place … it doesn’t end here.”
