Letter: State government is failing to meet its obligations

Posted

I am responding to a recent letter by Susan Rotblat-Walker, as she has several good points about the present status of Rhode Island government. Supporting one new person to make changes is not going to do it. There needs to be a change all round.

I myself have advocated for better and needed repairs of sidewalks in Warren for the past three years. As I have made my fight, local Legislators remain quiet and do nothing to move this matter forward. I have been embattled with the state DOT, and mean out fighting for action.

A recent tragedy occurred with a death of a young child, and our DOT looks at a six-month plan to review this. Our state reps do nothing! It took private citizens to act and add stop signs at their expense to bring awareness to this issue. Again, local reps are silent.

Where are Senator Walter Felag, Rep. Susan Donavan, Rep. Ken Marshall? This is our failed state government not doing for the people that elected them.

As a disabled person, I took my life in my hands traveling the sidewalks and crosswalks in Warren. I escaped being hit on several occasions. I was struck by a backing vehicle on Child Street.

My complaint about the violations of ADA access was presented to the DOJ, and in January, 2018, it came out with notice that most sidewalks are in violation of the ADA act. This issue placed a demand that the state DOT take charge and commence repairs.

Nobody is aware of this because this is being handled in the back room of state government. I notified my reps about this, and yet no one has stepped forward to offer assistance. They all remain silent.  So my advice, who you vote for, most likely will not help you when it is needed.
