Hugh Cole students sound off on phones, pay, dogs and more

Writing assignment gives students chance to make a point

Posted

Hugh Cole fifth graders got a lesson in activism — and the good old-fashioned art of letter writing — in a recent project organized by three teachers.
Students in Shannon Swist’s, Marilyn Jones’s and Whitney Ruggeri’s classes were asked to write an opinion argument as the cumulative part of a writing unit. Letters came in on many subjects, including the gender pay gap, adopting pets, the danger of spending too much time on the cell phone, and more. When they were done, they sent them off to the Warren Times-Gazette for publication. Click the following links to read some of the letters:

Madison Pacheco's letter on gymnastics

Savannah Murray's letter on dog adoption

Alona Leonard's letter on equal pay for women

Millie Piper's letter on too much TV, computer and cell phone use

Madison Kuzmisky's letter on dogs making the best pets
