Posted

Memorial Day is not until Sunday, but Hugh Cole students marked the somber occasion Friday morning by planting dozens of American flags around the elementary school and holding an assembly to honor those who gave their lives for the nation.

Students read the proclamation establishing the holiday in 1868, recited Lincoln's Gettysburg Address and "Freedom Isn't Free," and listened to songs sung by the Mt. Hope Choir. Guests for the event included Warren Town Council President Joseph DePasquale, Bristol Warren Regional School Committee members Erin Schofield,a Hugh Cole parent, and Paul Silva, as well as Judy Fardig from the Warren Department of Public Works, Tara Thibaudeau from the Warren Recreation Department, Brigadier General Richard Valente (retired) and other honored guests.
