The Town of Warren will be initiating two drainage improvement projects shortly which will be funded by a combination of Town funds and grants from the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management.
Park Street Flood Mitigation and Green Infrastructure Project
The primary goal of this project is to reduce flooding in the area of the East Bay Bike Path between Hope and Park streets. Presently stormwater collects on the westerly side of the bike path and its drainage is impeded, causing flooding. In order to remedy the problem a vegetated open channel swale will be created, and the existing swale will be enlarged and culverts underneath the bike path will be enlarged. In addition to eliminating flooding in the area the open channel swale will reduce the amount of bacteria and nutrient concentrations which discharge into Belcher’s Cove. One half of the project’s total cost of $233,600 is coming from a DEM grant.
Warren Boulevard Habitat Restoration Project
This project will improve drainage and reduce flooding in and around Warren Boulevard and Central Avenue. Work will include replacing the culvert at Warren Boulevard with a larger, flat-bottomed culvert to facilitate stream connectivity. The existing culvert is 24 inches in diameter, the new culvert will be 36 inches in diameter Additionally, 640 linear feet of stacked masonry will be removed and replaced with an open vegetated swale and flood storage bench. By creating an open swale, the area will mimic a natural floodplain which will reduce flooding and improve the conveyance of water. DEM is also funding one-half of the $327,120 in project costs.
Steering Committee members sought
The Warren Planning Board is looking for members of the community who are interested in contributing insight into the Town’s Comprehensive Plan to join a Steering Committee. Each municipality in Rhode Island is required to update its Comprehensive Plan. The Planning Board together with the Town Planner are leading the update but public input is valuable to that effort. Elements of the plan include Natural Resources, Recreation, Historical & Cultural Resources, Housing, Economic Development, Agriculture, Service & Facilities, Energy, Water Supply, Transportation, Natural Hazards & Climate Change and Land Use. Members of the community with an interest or professional experience in any of these elements are encouraged to participate. Participation is expected to consist of no more than two meetings; one at night and one on a Saturday.
For more information on any of these projects or to join Steering Committee, please contact Bob Rulli, Director of the Office of Planning & Community Development, 401-289-0529 or brulli@townofwarren-ri.gov.
