New Tiger Woods game is a winner on the Wii

Since I first took home a Nintendo Wii three years ago I’ve always found the system’s software presents an all or nothing situation. There are quite a few games I’ve enjoyed for the Wii, all of which present an easy level of accessibility and a strong replay value. Perhaps the most famous of this category is the near perfect bowling portion of the original Wii Sports. On the other side of the coin, there are plenty of titles I can recall that I played just long enough to competently review and put aside to never touch again.

The Tiger Woods golf franchise on the Wii has now put out back-to-back installments for the former category.

This year’s installment of EA Sports’ popular golf franchise, “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12: The Masters,” comes with a couple new features such as the famous Augusta National golf course and a career mode that centers on the historic tournament referenced in the game’s title. It also comes with a new caddy feature that helps players gauge distance, conditions and possible hitting options for shots. It’s an idea that sounds great and fortunately, delivers appropriately.

Last year, I played the 2011 version of the franchise for both Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Obviously, the Wii couldn’t hold a candle to the graphics put forth on the 360. On any given day, however, I’ll take the Wii version over the Xbox 360 version. The reason for this is the same as why I so feel so fondly of Wii Sports bowling: Tiger Woods games for the Nintendo Wii have an incredible accessibility level that doesn’t limit the ability of more hardcore gamers to ramp up the difficulty for a true challenge.

Yes, the Xbox version can also be simplified for the inexperienced but the simple ability to be able to power up your Wii, grab the Wiimote and swing it like a golf club makes Tiger Woods PGA Tour something for everyone. In its most basic form, “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 12” is something a family of four could enjoy for a Saturday night regardless of their past gaming experience. In its most complex form, the title represents something that has both the depth and difficulty hardcore gamers will hope for.

Our take: This year’s installment of the Tiger Woods franchise for the Wii accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do. It presents a game that is both welcoming to newcomers and challenging for experienced gamers.
