2012 end of the world prediction spawns a host of post-apocalyptic games

With the Mayan calendar ending this year and doomsday chatter running rampant around the globe, video game developers are looking to cash in on the hysteria. Well, thats what it looks like to me. There are ten solid post-apocalyptic games slated to drop this year with many more having that “end-of-the-world” aspect to their storylines. Have developers gone doomsday crazy? Is it too much and too similar for gamers? More importantly, do we have enough time to play them before the end?

No. No. And hopefully.

While I don’t believe the world will come to an end December 21, I feel that it has given developers and writers some great inspiration. There are some really amazing games under development. The basic premise is shared by most of these games (end of the world and life as we know it, death, destruction, blah blah blah), but they all have a unique twist and interpretation on this idea.

Now, I’m a huge survival horror fan which already have that doomsday feel to them. So I naturally gravitate towards games like Fall Out and Borderlands. I’m really into the suspense of these games. That feeling of dread while crawling through a dilapidated building is thrilling. Also getting the crap scared out of you by some twisted mutant smashing through a wall is great too. I can spend hours late at night playing these types of games.

Besides hours of enjoyment, we can learn valuable survival skills. Thanks to zombie films and games, I know how to kill a zombie (or other creature trying to devour me). Thanks to games like Fall Out, I know how to survive and find supplies in a post-apocalyptic wasteland. Well, maybe not real-world skills but I have thousands of hours of training. My father has taught me many survival skills over the years. Along with shows like Survivorman and Dual Survivor, I think I can survive and thrive in the post-apocalyptic world to come.

This wave of post-apocalyptic games includes some cool new titles like The Last of Us, Metro: Last Light and Lollipop Chainsaw. It also includes some great sequels like Darksiders 2 and Borderlands 2.  Read about each of these post-apocalyptic games below and get your training in before the end comes.
