PORTSMOUTH — A 28-year-old Dartmouth man was charged with driving while intoxicated and domestic assault after he fled the scene of an accident on Sunday, Aug. 26, police said.

According to Detective Lt. Michael C. Arnold, on Sunday around 6:10 p.m., officers were alerted to be on the lookout for a black Chevrolet Silverado that had just been involved in a hit-and-run accident on West Main Road near Raytheon. 

According to witnesses, the truck sideswiped another vehicle and continued northbound, operating erratically and at high speeds, Lt. Arnold said in a prepared statement.

Police later determined that the driver of the truck, identified as David S. Correia, of 1 Algonquin St., had also assaulted a 27-year-old female who was in the passenger seat, police said. 

According to the victim, Mr. Correia had picked her up, along with her 3-year-old daughter and a 19-year-old Portsmouth woman, in Middletown and began traveling north on West Main Road, Lt. Arnold said.

“The victim reported that Correia displayed signs of intoxication and at that point, the victim demanded she be let out. However, he refused and punched her several times in the face,” stated Lt. Arnold.

The truck continued north to the Sakonnet Bridge, where it rear-ended another vehicle, police said. When officers arrived, Mr. Correia displayed “obvious signs of intoxication,” failed a field sobriety test and was taken into custody, Lt. Arnold said.

He was charged with driving while intoxicated (first offense), domestic assault and failure to stop following an accident that resulted in damage to an attended vehicle. Mr. Correia was also issued a summons for refusing a chemical test and refusing a preliminary breath test.

The R.I. Department of Children, Youth & Families was notified due to the 3-year-old being in the vehicle at the time of the incident, Lt. Arnold said.
