Katz seeks 2nd amendment sanctuary status

Places resolution on Tiverton council agenda

TIVERTON — Justin Katz wants Tiverton to become a "Second Amendment Sanctuary Town," and to that end has placed a resolution to that effect on the Tiverton Town Council's agenda, to be considered by the council at its Tuesday, May 28 meeting at 7 p.m. in Town Hall.
The item appears deep in the published council agenda for the night (as Agenda Item 10(c)), and is backed up by the inclusion of a similar resolution adopted May 9 by the Town Council of Foster, the language of which Mr. Katz appears to propose as a model.
Consideration of the matter will take place after the print edition of The Sakonnet Times goes to press earlier Tuesday.
"I have heard from a number of Tiverton residents that they would like to join the other communities that have passed this resolution," Mr. Katz said. "They believe, as I do, that the State of Rhode Island has already gone too far toward finding ways to infringe on the right to bear arms, and legislators, as well as the governor, could use a reminder that the hundreds of Second Amendment advocates who demonstrate at the State House every time the issue comes up are not without support among elected officials," Mr. Katz said.
"People not guns need protection," said said Dr. Jerome Larkin, the elected Tiverton School Committee Chairman, emphasizing that he speaks only for himself. "This is just a distraction. I wish Mr. Katz would focus on actually getting something done for this town, rather than advancing his own out-of-touch ideology, "
"The Bill of Rights means what it says," Mr. Katz said, "that these rights 'shall not be infringed.'  If advocates want to change the Constitution, they should amend it. In the meantime, as the officials closest to the police officers who are generally the first line of enforcement, we have a duty to make clear that we value our residents' rights and, given limited personnel and funds, will not prioritize attempts to limit them."
Also on the agenda, as Item #5 ("General Open Public Forum" ) is a place on the agenda for members of the public to speak.
