Golf preview: Tiverton makes strides in dual match

The good news for the Tiverton High School golf team is that the team scored their lowest total of the season by shooting a four player round nine hole round of 202. The bad news is the team lost to both Barrington (156) and Bay View (169) in an Eastern Division dual match at Crestwood Country Club on a rainy Monday afternoon.

The two losses drop the Tigers to 1-3. The team previously beat Mt. Hope 246-276 and lost to East Providence 246-202.

The players

Tigers one player, senior Greg Petrarca led the team with an 11 over par 46.

“Greg is always composed. He never over swings,” said Head Coach Adam Tracy. “He plays in control. Nice and smooth all the time. He plays steady in every part of the game.”

Coach Tracy, a Mt. Hope High School alum, played basketball and golf for the Huskies. He previously helped out the basketball team and took over the golf team in 2016.

“This is my third year of coaching. Greg has played all four years and has been a big help to me as a new coach,” said coach Tracy. “He’s kind of showed me the ropes a little bit. It will be tough to lose him. The kids look up to him. He’s a really great kid.”

Tigers two player, junior Drew Germain shot a 14 over par 49.

Three player, junior TJ Mello shot a 50 and four player Cole Simmons shot a 57.

“Drew Germain plays with Greg all of the time. The two have junior memberships at Montaup our home course and play all summer together,” said coach Tracy.

Drew drives the ball really well. He hits it pretty far,” said coach Tracy. “He’s an all around good player. He plays fast. He could take a little more time lining up his shot. Sometimes his ball goes a little left, a little right. If he took more time to line it up he may do a little better.”

Three player, junior TJ Mello played a good round, but overhit his ball and landed in a backside bunker behind the eighth green. Mello chipped out onto the green and two putted.

“He is pretty consistent around the green,” coach Tracy said. “He can chip really well and doesn’t three putt too often. TJ has a really easy swing. He doesn’t hit the ball a mile, but he keeps it in the middle of the fairway.”

“He’s extremely competitive, which is fun. Last year he shot all of his best scores in matches,” coach Tracy said.

Tiverton’s other senior is Cole Simmons. Simmons has played all four years for the Tigers.

“He’s still kind of working on his game,” said coach Tracy. “He’s struggling a little bit. Every year he’s gotten better. He’s at every practice. If he’s not hitting irons well, he’ll go after practice and hit more irons. He’s getting better and better.”

Two first year players, sophomore Sam Costa and Freshman Cole Cerrillo round out the team.

“They are still working on their games, but will get to play every match,” said coach Tracy.
