George Schweitzer, 84, of Warwick, formerly Tiverton and Portsmouth

George Schweitzer, 84, of Warwick and formerly of Portsmouth, Tiverton, Coventry and Osprey, Fla., passed away on November 13, 2017, surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Judith A. (Arciero) Schweitzer. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Emil and Rose (Carrier) Schweitzer.

Mr. Schweitzer was the owner and operator of Kleer-Kleen Carpet Cleaning for over 30 years. He was an Army Korean War Veteran, 82nd Airborne Division and a member of the RI National Guard Reserve. He was also a 32nd Degree Mason.

The three words that sum up his life; God, Family, Country.

Besides his wife he is survived by five children, Charlene M. Almy, Lynn R. Sullivan and her husband Len, Scott G. Schweitzer and his wife Michele, Heidi Schweitzer and Kristin T. Scott; six step-children, Lisa J. LaBracio, Michele D. Lipman, Jerry M. Morvillo, Cynthia A. Tutan, Sandra L. Tordoff and Lori C. Morvillo; six grandchildren, Craig Almy, Melissa Schweitzer, Alyssa R. Sullivan, Dylan O’Connor, Scottie Schweitzer and Amanda Scott; 14 step-grandchildren, Malorie and Mathew Lipma, Genarro and Quinn Morvillo, Jake Tutan, Nicholle Douglas, Dustin Tordoff, Stephanie Mitchell, Dylan, Kylie, Ethan and Lydia Tordoff, Jenna Strauss and Sarah Maloof; former wife, Sylvia (Jean) Schweitzer; a brother, William Gerlach, and nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late, Ann Gerlach, grandfather of the late Cayla Marie Almy, and father-in-law of the late Richard Almy.

Funeral service is Monday, Nov. 20, at 11:30 a.m. at the Hill Funeral Home, 822 Main St., East Greenwich. Visitation prior to the service, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Committal with military honors will be in RI Veterans Cemetery, Exeter. In lieu of flowers, donation may be made to the DAV at secure.dav.org/donate

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
