PORTSMOUTH — Five juveniles were hurt when the car they were riding in veered off Middle Road and struck a stone wall and a tree Saturday night, police said.

According to Detective Lt. Michael C. Arnold of the Police Department, police responded at about 9:10 p.m. Saturday to the area of 936 Middle Road for a report of a motor vehicle accident.

“Upon their arrival they observed a 2011 Toyota Camry that had veered off the roadway and collided with a stone wall and a tree,” Lt. Arnold said in a prepared statement.

Officers and medical personnel attended to five juveniles ranging in age from 16 to 17 years old who were out of the vehicle and “conscious and alert,” he said.

Police determined the vehicle had been traveling northbound on Middle Road when it left the roadway and crashed into the wall and tree.

A Portsmouth Fire Department dispatcher said all of the occupants were transported to Hasbro Children’s Hospital and were in “stable condition” immediately following the accident.

Portsmouth firefighters received mutual aid from Newport, Tiverton, Middletown and Navy rescue units, said the Fire Department dispatcher.

The Portsmouth Police Accident Recon Team, along with the Detective Division, assisted with the investigation.

“Upon completion of this investigation the operator of the vehicle may face traffic-related citations,” Lt. Arnold said.
