Walk in a beautiful place for two good causes

To the editor:
Another grand time for Westporters of all ages is coming up.
The Westport Education Foundation (WEF) and the Friends of the Westport Council On Aging  (FWCOA) are again collaborating on a Second Annual Walk for Westport to be held on Saturday September 15, 2012, in Westport Harbor.
Both organizations provide valuable services to Westport Citizens.  The Westport Education Foundation provides funds for educational projects, enrichment programs, and diverse learning experiences that could not be covered by the school budget.
The FWCOA provides funds to the Senior Center for furnishings and equipment; food, money and volunteers for the  Food Pantry;  funds for its Social Day Program and for capital improvements to the building and grounds. The center’s budget cannot cover these costs. The Walk for Westport was the brainchild of the late Rosemary Lenrow, president of the FWCOA, who wanted to unite the generations of Westport for the common good of the town.
This year’s Walk for Westport will again begin at 9:30 a.m. and proceed north  from  the parking area at Howland and CK Beach Clubs at the corner of Atlantic Ave. and Howland Road in the harbor district.  It will end at Elephant Rock Beach Club.  It is a scenic route for walkers of all ages.
At the Beach Club, Al Deston will play the piano and sing old and new songs, Skip Daniels, a wonderful magician, will entertain young and old.  There will be face painting, shell and Walkathon T-shirt painting, food, hot and cold drinks for the participants, and a raffle with great prizes. An army of volunteers from both organizations will man water stations and monitor safety.  We are grateful to our angel sponsors, Bay Coast Bank, Lees Market, Prima Care and Rosemary’s Family for their financial support and to other sponsors who have also given monetary support and prizes for the raffle.
One of the most wonderful outcomes of last year’s Walk for Westport was the sense of community felt by people of all ages who truly enjoyed walking and being together for the good of our town.  We hope you will all be with us again this year and will bring your friends with you. For sign-up information,  please call the Senior Center at 508-636-1026.
