Munch on wild plants during woods walk

WESTPORT AREA — The Trustees of Reservations will offer an edible wild plant walk at Copicut Woods in the Southeastern Massachusetts Bioreserve from 1 to 3 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 15. Education Coordinator Linton Harrington will lead this walk to explore the natural foods of the forest.

Southeastern Massachusetts is home to more than 150 species of edible wild plants, many of which have been enjoyed by people for thousands of years. Walk participants will encounter over a dozen edible plant species and learn tips on identification, edible portion(s), and preparation methods for each plant as well as guidelines for safe and environmentally responsible foraging. Wild grape jam, Indian cucumber root, hickory nuts, chestnuts, huckleberries, and sassafras tea are just some of the wild foods that can be sampled.

This program is one of an ongoing series offered by The Trustees throughout the year. “These walks provide an opportunity to get out and enjoy the late summer days while exploring some unique places that many people have never been before,” says Harrington. “Spending an afternoon learning about the diversity of edible plants in the Bioreserve is a great way to introduce people to this large-scale protected landscape.”

The walk on September 15 is free for Trustees members and $5 for nonmembers and will begin at the Copicut Woods parking lot on Indian Town Road in Fall River not far from the Westport line.
