Sing along with Judy in Barrington

Meet Me in St. Louis

One of Judy Garland’s best-loved movies, “Meet Me in St. Louis (1944),” is next up in librarian Doug Swiszcz’s film lecture series, “Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance!: The Evolution of Movie Musicals.” Filmed in glorious Technicolor, the film is director Vincente Minnelli’s beautifully realized evocation of homespun life in America at the turn of the 20th century. Episodic in nature, the story follows one St. Louis family through the changes of the seasons as the 1904 World’s Fair approaches. The ensemble cast includes child star Margaret O’Brien, and the Hugh Martin-Ralph Blane score features memorable songs like “The Boy Next Door,” “The Trolley Song,” and “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas.” The series continues with “Singin’ in the Rain” (Oct. 17), “Fiddler on the Roof” (Oct. 24) and “Chicago” (Oct. 31).
