Saluting screen musicals in Barrington

BARRINGTON —

Jeannette MacDonald and Maurice Chevalier star in “Love Me Tonight,” the first movie in librarian Doug Swiszcz’s new film lecture series, “Gotta Sing! Gotta Dance!: The Evolution of Movie Musicals,” which runs for six consecutive Wednesdays starting Sept. 26. The 1932 film is a fanciful tale of a Parisian tailor (Chevalier) who travels to a chateau in the country ostensibly to collect a debt, but who ends up falling in love with the beautiful princess (MacDonald) who lives there. Director Rouben Mamoulian mined the still-new technology of “talking pictures” to effortlessly incorporate sound — both music and ambient noise — into the story. The film is well-served by a romantic Rodgers and Hart score that evokes its fairy tale quality. Here’s the rest of the series lineup: “Top Hat” (Oct. 3), “Meet Me in St. Louis” (Oct. 10), “Singin’ in the Rain” (Oct. 17), “Fiddler on the Roof” (Oct. 24) and “Chicago” (Oct. 31).
