Fred Zilian will appearin costume as the president in “Abraham Lincoln Speaks: The Civil War and My Gettysburg Address.” Mr. Zilian will not give a monologue but interact with the crowd as President Lincoln. The “president” will talk about his early life, his election, the war until November 1963, and then his Gettysburg Address (Nov. 19 is the 150th anniversary of the famous speech).
Polar plunge to end year
The Portsmouth 375th Anniversary Steering Committee plans to end the year-long festivities the way it began on Jan. 1, with “375” hearty souls jumping into the Sakonnet River at noon on Dec. 31.
This closing event will be a “pledge” dive to assist in raising funds to help inaugurate a section in the Portsmouth Free Public Library exclusively dedicated to Portsmouth’s history.
Volunteers, especially with pledge fund-raising experience, are needed to help plan and organize this event. E-mail Bob Hamilton at email@example.com or call 683-3553.
Mr. Smith told Town Council members recently that the plunge is the last major fund-raising event for the library fund. He also said the committee is looking for council members’ “active involvement” on Dec. 31, although there is an opt-out clause.
“If you raise at least $50 from friends, you can opt out from going into the water,” said Mr. Smith.
“You want the check now?” responded Council President James Seveney.
