The film “Moonrise Kingdom” will open in theaters in Providence and Newport this Friday, June 22.
A spokeswoman for the Rhode Island Film and TV Office said the movie, all of which was filmed locally, will be screened first at the Jane Pickens Theatre in Newport and at the Avon Cinema on the East Side of Providence.
A special showing this Thursday, June 21, at the Jane Pickens Theatre, is sold out.
The Wes Anderson-directed film premiered at the Canne’s Film Festival in May.
People here caught glimpses of the filming at a number of nearby locations last summer. These included Prudence Island and the Prudence Ferry, the Portsmouth Camp Meeting off Hedly Street, and the Glen Manor House in Portsmouth, among others. Bill Murray, Bruce Willis and other cast members went to Standish Boatyard in Tiverton one day where a fishing boat took them down the Sakonnet for filming.
