Horseneck challenges sand sculptors Saturday

Sand Castle on the BeachHorseneck Beach State Reservation will teem with creativity and excitement this Saturday, Aug. 10, when the beach hosts its third annual Sand Sculpture Festival.

Returning champion sculptors, along with first-timers and children with pails and shovels will converge on Horseneck to create and compete for fun, glory and prizes.

The Sand Sculpture Festival typically features casual castle builders side-by-side with talented sculptors. There are three age categories: ages 6-12, 13-17. and adults. All children under 18 must be accompanied by an adult.

The construction of the sand sculptures will start at 11 a.m. and finish at 2 p.m. All contestants should arrive to the beach as early as possible since the parking lot can be filled to capacity by noon. Judging will begin at 2:15 p.m. and prizes will be given out to the winners once the judges have made their decisions.

All sculptures must consist entirely of beach sand (no rocks, sticks, shells, or seaweed). Sand and salt water will be provided; participants are asked to bring their own pails, shovels, etc. Event participation is free but there is an $8 parking fee. Pre-registration is recommended but not required. Call 508-636-8816.

Prizes have been donated by LazerGate of Fall River (ten prizes) Lees Market, Village Pizza, Alderbrook Farm of Westport, Not Your Average Joe’s, Handy Hill Creamery, Osprey Sea Kayak Adventures, and others. Sponsors for this event include the Department of Conservation and Recreation.

Horseneck Beach is located at the southern end of Route 88 in Westport.
