Under the cork: Wines to enjoy with your Easter feast

Fattoria San Lorenzo 2011 “Vigna Di Gino” Verdicchio di Castello di Jesi. Le Marche, Italy

Food—Cork3—3.27.13Verdicchio is a grape from the Le Marche region of Italy, on the Adriatic coast, which has highly volcanic soil. Fattoria San Lorenzo has been passed down from father to son for multiple generations. Currently, Natalino Crognaletti is the owner, barrel-maker (from trees grown on his property), winemaker, and vineyard manager. This wine is aged 6 months sur lie, or “on the lees,” which adds complexity and depth to the wine. This method is not typical for verdicchio because of its searing acidity and almond, citrus notes. Being the Pazzo wine maker that Natalino is, Vigna di Gino is a beautifully balanced, crisp, and round expression of Verdicchio. Enjoy his wine with Roasted poultry dishes or oysters on the half shell. $17.99

Domaine de Fontsainte 2012 Gris de Gris. Corbieres, France Dry Rose

Food—Cork1—3.27.13Domaine de Fontsainte Gris de Gris is a dry, elegant, and a beautifully salmon-colored rose. Made from Grenache Gris, Grenache Noir, Cinsault, Mourvedre, and Carignan grapes, this wine has aromas of fresh strawberries, raspberries, and violets. One of our true staff favorites, this is a wine that is in short supply due to very low yields in the 2012 vintage.  Corbieres is a region in the Southern Rhone Valley of France where the cold, strong, and dry Mistral winds are prevalent, starting in the mountains in the north and traveling all the way down to the Mediterranean Sea. The Mistral can range from 50-90 kilometers per hour, forging grape vines to cling to the vines for dear life, giving the wine a minerality that is unique to this region. Enjoy Gris de Gris with your Easter honey glazed ham. $14.99

Rupert & Rothschild 2010 Classique Western Cape, South Africa

Food—Cork4—3.27.13Rupert & Rothschild’s Classique is the collaboration between one of South Africa’s most famous winemakers, Anthonij Rupert, and Benjamin de Rothschild of the Mouton Rothschild Estate in Bordeaux, arguably the most famous winemaker in the world. These two brought together the best of both worlds: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petite Verdot, and Cabernet Franc (Bordeaux staples); as well as Shiraz and Pinotage (South African staples). The result is a harmony of Bordeaux elegance and flavor, with the rustic gaminess of South African Pinotage and Shiraz. Classique shows bright acidity, earthy mushroom, blackberry, plums, a touch of game and a side of gripping tannins that will pair perfectly with your Easter Lamb. $14.99

Thomas Goss 2011 Shiraz, Mclaren Vale, Australia

Food—Cork2—3.27.13Thomas Goss, an Englishman, is one of the original pioneers of the Mclaren Vale Region. In the mid 1800’s, he brought his family to Australia in search of gold—he was lucky enough to find it. This funded a vineyard and winery in a region that produces consistently great wines. Mclaren Vale is known for ultra-dry summers and thin soils, allowing vines to dig deep into the earth in search of water and minerals. Its proximity to Gulf St. Vincent moderates the temperature. Today, winemaker Ben Riggs still sources most of his fruit from the original vineyard planted by Goss. This Shiraz is soft and supple with plenty of juicy dark fruits, spice, and licorice. Try this wine with herb-roasted beef on Easter Sunday. $14.99
