Drinking eight, 8-ounce glasses of water daily is what’s recommended by health experts, but many people are lucky to consume half that amount. Not reaching this daily goal can potentially leave you with muscle soreness, lightheadedness or nausea, energy loss, fatigue or a headache. It may also cause you to overeat if you mistake the need for fluid as hunger.
A little variation can make staying hydrated a much easier, and tastier, task. Try one of the following thirst quenching ideas:
• Splash a little 100-percent juice in your water to add a bit of flavor. Make sure to only add enough for the water to change color.
• Sip on flavored (or unflavored) seltzer for a zip of carbonation to liven up your taste buds.
• Add some lemon, lime or orange slices to water for a citrus kick. Turn it up another notch by adding cooling cucumber slices and refreshing mint leaves, too.
• Make healthy, homemade ginger ale by mixing unflavored seltzer, slices of fresh ginger and a little bit of honey for sweetness. Yum!
Cucumber Citrus Water
Makes 8 servings
• 2 liters water (about 8.5 cups)
• 1 teaspoon ginger root, finely grated
• 1 cucumber, peeled and thinly sliced
• 1 lemon, thinly sliced
• 12 mint leaves
Combine all ingredients in a pitcher and chill in the fridge overnight.
