East Providence talks banned books

EAST PROVIDENCE — Hester Kaplan (pictured) will join fellow authors Janet Taylor Lisle, Roland Merullo and Taylor Polites is speaking and reading from selected banned books in a special event Monday co-hosted by The East Providence Public Library and the Rhode Island affiliate of the ACLU. Joining these local authors will  be Sam Coale, long-time reviewer for the Providence Journal, and former Providence Journal Books Editor Doug Riggs. The event falls during Banned Books Week 2012, an American Library Association-sponsored event that draws attention to the importance of the freedom to read and to publicize threats to that freedom. Light refreshments will be served and Books on the Square will have the authors’ books for purchase and signing.
