Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable star in the classic romantic comedy, “It Happened One Night,” which will be screened for free in Portsmouth Wednesday. The 1934 Frank Capra-directed film was the first to win all five major Academy Awards — for best picture, director, actor, actress and screenplay. It follows poor little rich girl Ellie Andrews (Colbert), who’s run away from her millionaire father, and unemployed newsman Peter Warne (Gable) smells a big scoop to get his job back. But things don’t go as planned as the runaway heiress and brash reporter fall in love.
