Westport's 9-year-olds advanced to the Roland Fautex Memorial Tournament title game where they bowed to Swansea 10-0 Sunday afternoon at Westport High School
If Swansea didn't play in the double-elimination event, Westport would have gone unbeaten. Swansea sent Westport to the loser's bracket thanks a 10-7 win the previous day.
But the locals had problems scoring runs, for that matter, getting hits, in the championship clash. Mitchell Leary's single in the fifth inning broke up the Swansea no-hitter.
Brandon Camara and Trevor MacNeil smacked home runs and Westport broke open a close game with seven fourth-inning runs en route to a 12-2 victory over South Plymouth in the loser's bracket final. MacNeil also pitched a five-inning, complete game in a contest shortened because of the tourney's 10-run mercy rule.
Westport's first game against Swansea was more competitive although the outcome was the same as the title game. Westport fell behind 7-2 in the third inning but rallied to tie the score 7-7. Swansea then escaped a bases-loaded situation in the fourth inning and went on to the win.
Craig Huyler and Camara had three hits each when Westport opened tournament play with a 19-0 victory over Tiverton. Westport was ahead 11-0 after three innings before ending the game via the mercy rule with an eight-run fourth. Richie Hartnett had two hits and Chris Silvia, Thomas Yeargin and Leary combined to pitch the two-hit shutout.
