This state budget is worth celebrating

To the editor:

I have to tell you, it feels great to celebrate the passage of a budget on which we all agree, one that reflects the needs and wishes of Rhode Islanders. It is to the credit of the House and Senate leadership and the governor that they have put aside politics and worked together to make this happen.

My constituents are looking for streamlined government, tax relief and assistance for the needy. This budget does just that. It reforms the pension system, reduces the car tax and increases aid to local communities.

No one claims that this budget is perfect. But in view of budget constraints, I think that the General Assembly and the governor have done what was needed to make the best use of our state dollars.

Today, I am enthusiastic about the budget. I am enthusiastic about the spirit of compromise. And I am enthusiastic about the future of the State of Rhode Island.

June N. Gibbs

State Senator, District 12, Little Compton, Tiverton, Newport Middletown
