WARREN - A 43-year-old Warren woman died last Wednesday after a seven-car pile-up on Market Street at dusk on Tuesday afternoon.
Terry L. Sullivan, of 300 Market St., who was employed at a doughnut shop in Seekonk, died at Rhode Island Hospital less than 24-hours after the collision occurred. No one else was seriously injured.
On Monday, Lt. Joseph Loiselle said police were still waiting to hear from the state medical examiner before releasing the exact cause of death for Ms. Sullivan, who was unconscious at the scene.
The accident occurred at about 4:30 p.m. last Tuesday, Nov. 4, in the rain. Police said two calls were received by the dispatcher simultaneously, one from the intersection of Market Street and Grove Avenue, and the other from Market Street at Schoolhouse Road.
Patrolman Roland Brule reported from Schoolhouse Road that a 1995 BMW, operated by Vilma Silveira, 30, of 123 Market St., and a 1995 Pontiac, driven by Nettie Lima, 47, of 40 Sefton Drive, Bristol, were both struck by Ms. Sullivan's Saturn after it crossed the yellow lines into the other lane of travel, sideswiping both cars.
When Patrolmen Christopher A. Perreault and Kenneth Medeiros responded to Grove Avenue, they discovered the Saturn surrounded by Warren fire and rescue personnel, who were removing Ms. Sullivan from the car.
Officers learned from other drivers involved in the accident and witnesses at the scene that Ms. Sullivan was driving erratically northbound on Market Street.
Jayne A. Devol, 37, of 39 Sherman Ave., Bristol, said she was attempting a left turn in her 1990 Volvo from Fairlawn Plaza onto Market Street and that cars traveling southbound stopped to let her pass. She began turning when the Saturn, traveling north, collided with her car causing it to spin.
Jessica Tavares, 18, of 48 Central Ave., in a Dodge Aries headed south on Market Street, told police she stopped to allow Ms. Devol to make the left turn and was also struck by the Saturn.
After slamming on his brakes to avoid the accident ahead, Eliuterio Meneses, 54, of 54 Warren Ave., operating a Mitsubushi, was rear-ended by a Chevrolet Lumina driven by Edward Francis, 26, of 331 Metacom Ave.
Police said there were no skid marks on the road where the Saturn hit the Volvo, although officers noted that the roads were wet at the time.
