Mt Hope relay teams set school records

The Mt. Hope High School boys' and girls' 4 x 1-mile relay teams established new school records when they participated in the Knights of Columbus Relays Sunday.

The boys' team of Kevin Mendes, Rob Vittoria, Darryl Larivee and Ben Persons beat two other Mt. Hope teams and established a school record with a time of 22:37.88.

The girls' team of Allie Teixeira, Katerina Forrest, Joy Risko and Alyson Rego established a school record with a time of 25:43.49. The squad placed fifth in the division, and second in its heat. Rego had a strong finish to hold off a Westerly runner at the end.

"I was very happy with all the runners," said Mt. Hope coach Andrew Sabourin. "They ran well especially for this early in the season."

Ninth-grader Emma MacDougall was impressive in her debut as she placed eighth out of 40 competitors who vied in the freshman mile with a time of 6:17. Alyssa Felix and Michelle Van Vleck each did well while competing in the hammer for the first time.

Nick Rocha tossed the hammer a personal-best 103.' Teammates Matt Drolet and Jordan Almeida completed an impressive double, as they might be the only competitors ever to do both the hammer and the mile at the event.
