The Mt. Hope High School hockey team charged into the Division III playoffs this weekend with a 3-0 win over North Providence and a dramatic 1-1 tie with Providence Country Day.
Mt. Hope pelted the North Providence goal with 40 shots Friday, twice as many as were rendered upon Huskies' goaltender Corey Lescault who recorded his division leading fifth shutout of the season.
Brett Morra and Mike Augustus each tallied first period goals for the Huskies. Kyle Goglia added the team's third goal in the second stanza.
A day later, the Huskies trailed Providence Country Day 1-0 late in the third period. Already on a power-play, the Huskies emptied their net for a 6-4 advantage. Ryan Doherty snapped home the equalizer with 29 seconds remaining.
The teams played a scoreless overtime session, splitting the two points.
That final point proved precious to both teams. Doherty's tally may prove the lethal blow to PCD's playoff hopes. It also moved Mt. Hope into a three way tie for fourth place overall in Division III, with 21 points. Several games remain to be played this week which will eventually settle Mt. Hope's playoff seed, likely to be either a fifth or sixth seed.
"Either position is pretty decent," said head coach Rick Sousa. "We put together a nice push here at the end. We've improved as a team."
Dependant upon the Huskies' final seeding, they will play either Narraganset, North Kingstown or Saint Raphael in a best-of-three game series beginning with a road game Friday, March 10, a home skate on Saturday, March 11 and an "if necessary" contest on their opposition's home ice, Monday, March 13.
