Superintendent Dr. Linda Galton said the article in Shorelines on March 6 was factually in error in how it described her salary compared with the peer group used.

The chart was a per pupil cost, not a salary cost, as she said. The chart says the per pupil cost of Westport's superintendent's office rose to $121 in 2006, up from $97 in 2004.

By comparison, for the peer group studied, the superintendents'salaries equated to $79 per pupil in 2006. In 2004, for the peer group, the superintendents' salaries came to an average of $75 per pupil.

According to town budget reports, Dr. Galton's salary was $123,098 for 2005-2006, not $121,000 as stated in the article. The preliminary school budget for 2009 shows a salary of $132,272 plus benefits of $16,000, according to information provided at Town Hall.
