Bristol Speakout: Week of May 8

I'm calling about the appraisals. I've owned this property since '53, which is 55 years, and my property went up $89,950, which is a 26 percent increase. I went down to town hall and asked them how they did this, and they told me that I live on the waterfront. As long as I live on the waterfront, that's what it's gonna cost. I don't think the 26 percent increase is a fair evaluation. I don't know how we got into this, but I think we have the wrong appraisers.

Here's a thought: If every property owner would take a stand, and that includes all you wealthy people who own or owned companies employing lower and middle-class individuals and paid their tax bills based on their old evaluation instead of the new one, that would send a serious message to the town. Remember, talk is cheap. We don't need to hear their explanation regarding an increase. We are stronger in numbers. Actions speak louder than words. Let them know we mean business. Put up flyers, speak to your neighbors, etc., and let's send a message that will be heard.

Does the town administrator have a special in person in mind when she had them recalculate the scores using only 60 percent of the value? I wonder who she had in mind that didn't make the list the first time.

I'm reading about the increase in valuations. I don't understand it myself. First of all, people that have old houses, some of them may not have made any improvements, but I know some with old houses who made improvements but they don't come and re-evaluate them after they do it, just before. It doesn't make sense how much it went up. First of all they said the taxes were going to go down. It doesn't make sense.

I got a question on that brief on our town administrator. How long is this program for? Will she still be getting pay from the town while she is there? Is John Day able to act as the town administrator?

With the salaries the school department, principals and town employees get, it is time that they pay their own health plan like the rest of us. When the factories in Bristol and Warren closed up or moved out of state, they dropped the health plan for all their former employees. Take Kaiser employees: They have to pay their own health plan. The taxpayers cannot afford to give these people big salaries plus all the benefits that go with it. It is time for them to pay their own health plan instead of giving them big raises. Thank you.

I'm calling about the letter about Buddy Cianci. I believe Mr. Cianci is a veteran of the United States military, and also he has paid his debt to society with his imprisonment at Fort Dix. I cannot understand what the uproar is. I actually think there's a good message in Mr. Cianci, because he now has a job, he has gone to prison, paid his debt to society and has come out and is working. Children should learn that if you do do something wrong and you can make amends and get a job and contribute to society. As for the letter writer, she may be casting stones she shouldn't be casting.

With the amount of money I am paying in taxes, I have a couple of questions: First of all, why isn't our school system the best in the state?

I am calling to complain about the Bristol Harbor Patrol and the Bristol Harbor Commission. They are quick to make sure that we pay our bill on time, yet I notice that there is nothing being done on the repairs on the Church Street dock wall baffle, that has been broken up for just over a year and a half now. I called to find out and I never received a response back. Now I have to fight to make sure that I get my dock paid on time, which makes no sense whatsoever. Isn't it nice that the harbormaster's driving around in a nice new truck. What is that all about?

This is about the police chief. Why waste taxpayer money and pay a consultant to go through all the rigmarole if the test scores don't count or don't matter? Why waste the personnel board's time if they submit three names and the town administrator doesn't go with those three names? She can pick anybody she wants I guess.

I'm calling about the person who sent out the invites for the Extreme Makeover party at the Crowne Plaza. We put in anywhere from 50 to 75 hours in three and a half days to basically get a near impossible feat become a reality. I'm very disappointed that we did not receive invitations to the party at the Crowne Plaza. I'm sure I speak for the landscapers, the framers, the cleaners, the painters, the floor guys, electricians and carpenters, and everyone who made that possible. I also want to say that I wasn't happy to see all the pencil and paper pushers there, and not really many people that broke their back to get this job done. I'm very disappointed and I really think they owe us an apology. Someone messed up badly. A lot of workers sacrificed their time from families to get the job done. It was a great experience but as we sat there freezing, we should have been invited to this party.
