Doing the Diaper Derby crawl at Clements' Market

Slow starter Nola Haynes (left), 9 months, of Portsmouth, overtakes Ethan Quicksall, 10 months, of Tiverton.
PORTSMOUTH — Eleven toddlers competed last week in a crawling race at Clements' Market, sponsored by Huggies Diapers. Children lined up at the edge of mats with parents on either side, who set them loose at "Go" to be the first to crawl across the finish line. If they stand and walk, they would be disqualified.

"Hopefully, they crawl across," said Jerry Bloom of Clement's Market. "But in some cases they sit there and cry."

Parents get involved by calling their child across the "lanes" though Mr. Bloom said the children often crossed paths. A time limit was not set but the fastest crawlers brought home a carload of diapers.

First prize winner was Gracin Raposa, accopmanied by mother Alison Raposa. Nola Haynes came in second, and was there with her mother Barbara Kinsella. Third place went to Avery Roman, with her mother Beth Roman.

The market also raffled off a gift basket filled with baby items, and handed out bibs and stuffed animals to all who participated.
