East Bay gymnastics squad wins state title

Members of the team (in no particular order) are Nicole Silva, Dorothy Dickman, Alexandra Gessman, Lily Sirpenski, Alexandra Absi, Caitlin Bisbano, Marissa Robinson, Lori Chace, Elizabeth Clair, McKayla Costa, Ashley Reynolds, Kyla St.Laurent, Amanda Bernard, Stacy McGlory and Bethanie DaSilva. Not present for the photos were Kennedy Oliveira, Rachel Tauber and Lauren Irons.
The East Bay Gymnastics Center Level 4 team won the state title and four other EBGC squads finished in fourth place or better when they vied in the RIUSGA State Meet at Rhode Island College recently. East Bay's Level 5 team was state runner-up, its Level 9 squad finished third and its Level 8 and Prep-Optional groups each placed fourth.

Level 4

East Bay's Level 4 squad cruised to the state title by placing four gymnasts among the top eight all-around finishers among 10-year-olds, two of the top five among 9-year-olds, three of the top seven among 11-year-olds and the top two finishers among those 12 and older.

Ten-year-old Lily Sirpenski was tops in the all-around and earned the Gail Southworth Award for compiling the highest combined beam and floor score in the entire competition.

Sirpenski had a 9.65 on beam, a 9.25 on floor, a 9.5 on vault and a 9.2 on uneven parallel bars for a top all-around score of 37.60. Teammates Kennedy Oliveira (fifth, 36.475) Alexandra Absi (seventh, 36.175) and Caitlin Bisbano (eighth, 35.925) rounded out East Bay's top four finishers. Marissa Robinson (35.175) and Lori Chace (35.0) also figured prominently in helping the squad win the title.

Lauren Irons paced the club's nine-year-olds with a third-place, 36.325 all-around score. Her 9.35 beam score tied for top honors in the age group. Nicole Silva had the best vault (9.575) and finished fifth all-around 35.825. Dorothy Dickman's 10th-place, all-around finish included a 9.15 uneven parallel bars performance and Alexandra Gessman's 34.10 score included an 8.75 vault.

East Bay's Elizabeth Clair compiled scores of 9 or better in all four disciplines to finish third in all-around (37.025) among 11-year-olds. McKayla Costa's 9.775 vault score paced her to a 36.825 all-around tally and to fifth-place overall. Ashley Reynolds was two spots behind Costa with a 36.05 score which included a 9.35 vault.

Kayla St.Laurent (35.15) and Amanda Bernard (35.025) placed 15th and 16th respectively among the 28 gymnasts in the age group. Bernard's 9.275 balance beam effort was third best in the group.

Stacy McGlory won the Level 4 competition for 12-year-olds with a 36.55 tally which included a 9.4 vault. Teammate Bethanie DaSilva was runner-up in the bracket with a 36.40 all-around score which included a vault mark the same as McGlory's. Rachel Tauber came through with a 35.55 score for seventh-place overall. Her 9.45 vault was the best among 20 competitors in the group.

Level 5

East Bay's Aubrey LaFlamme won the balance beam (9.175) and placed third overall of 25 participants in Level 5's 11-year-old competition. LaFlamme's 36.775 effort was just .75 points behind the winner.

The club's Danielle Butts (36.50), Katie Brown (36.225), Brooke Pacheco (35.90) and Jessica Varrichione (35.375) finished fourth through seventh in all-around score while teammate Shannon Meade (33.6) finished 15th. Butts tied for the best uneven parallel bars effort (9.5) and Pacheco's 9.4 floor exercise routine and her 9.3 vault each was good enough to earn her a tie for second place in the event.

Hannah Gouveia was East Bay's lone Level 5 entry among 9- and 10-year-olds and she finished third among 25 gymnasts with a 36.85 all-around score.

Allison Borowick won balance beam (9.3) and finished as runner-up in Level 5 in the 12-year-old competition with a 36.325 all-around effort. Borowick also was second on vault (9.2) and fourth on bars (9.025). Teammate Alicia Jannitto (35.825) finished fourth in the age group and Michelle D'Addio (34.60) placed 11th among 24 competitors. Jannitto's 9.125 balance beam score was third best in the bracket.

Level 9

Kayla Martin qualified for regional competition when she finished fourth in Level 9 with an all-around score of 34.30. Martin placed third on vault (8.725) and beam (8.775) among the 11 entrants in the group.

Teammates Courtney Flanagan (32.90), Madeline Merrill (32.675), Lindsey Curry (32.40) and Kayla Prendergast (32.25) held down the seventh- through tenth-place spots. Merrill's 9.15 balance-beam effort was good for second place, while Curry and Flanagan each received a vault score of 8.75 to tie for fourth.

Level 8

East Bay had just four Level 8 entries among 32 overall but two of the girls managed to win event titles. SaraJane Bibeau won the uneven parallel bars competition (9.25) in the 15-and-over category and placed third overall with a 35.25 tally. Bibeau also was runner-up on balance beam (8.9). Teammate Kerry Estrella (33.975) finished ninth overall with a consistent effort. Her scores in the four events ranged from 8.3 on beam to 8.65 on bars.

Stacey Cabral won floor exercise (9.25), qualified for regionals and finished eighth overall in the Level 8 event for 13- and 14-year-olds. Cabral's all-around score was 33.65. Kristin Belmore received an 8.4 on balance beam, the only event in which she participated.

Prep Optional

Diane LaChance won three events, tied for first on bars and captured the all-around title with a 37.2 score in the Prep Optional 6.5 Level competition.

LaChance earned the Jackie Court Award for top all-around score in the level and the Gail Southworth Award for highest combined balance beam (9.3) and floor exercise (9.45) scores. LaChance's 9.2 vault was best among the group and her 9.25 uneven parallel bars score left her in a tie for first in the event.

Teammate Laura Hughes was Prep Optional Level 5.5's top all-around finisher (36.35) who also won uneven parallel bars (9.0) among girls 11- to 13-years-old. East Bay's Amy Homan won vault (9.45) and floor exercise (9.65) en route to a fourth-place finish in the all-around (35.95). Vying in the 5.5 Level for 14-and-over, East Bay's Arielle McAloon came through with a 32.70 score which included an 8.7 vault.

Level 7

East Bay had just two gymnasts participate in Level 7 competition. Kyle McGovern finished third overall in the 12-to-14 age group and Micaela Massa placed fifth in the 15-and-over bracket.

McGovern gave a consistent effort with scores ranging from 8.9 on balance beam to 9.05 on vault in finishing with an all-around score of 35.70. Massa compiled a 34.875 score which included the third best vault score (9.225) among 10 competitors.
