Fire causes $100,000 damage at State Road mall

A fire caused $100,000 damage at Coaksett Commons at 875 State Road on Friday evening, May 9. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. There were no injuries.

The Westport Fire Department responded to a fire alarm that activated at 8:42 p.m. The first arriving units encountered heavy smoke and fire coming from the unit occupied by E. Osterman, Inc.

Sounding a third alarm, Westport firefighters along with firefighters from Dartmouth District #3 were able to attack the fire quickly and aggressively and confine the damage to only one unit of the mall.

Due to the early detection by the smoke alarms and the construction the building, which includes a fire wall, nearby units only suffered moderate smoke damage.

The owner of the Coaksett Commons is Rte. Six Executive Plaza Realty Trust.

Along with Dartmouth District #3, Westport also received aid from Dartmouth District #2 and the Tiverton fire department. The Westport Ladies Auxiliary and the Providence Canteen provided firefighters with refreshments.
