John Moniz, 88, Portsmouth

Worked for state DOT

John Moniz, 88, of 173 Brownell Lane, Portsmouth, died Wednesday, May 7, 2008, at the Rhode Island Veterans Home, Bristol. He was the husband of the late Bella (Lema) Moniz.

Born in Portsmouth on December 5, 1919, he was the son of the late Joseph and Virginia (Barbosa) Moniz.

Mr. Moniz worked as a laborer for the State of Rhode Island Department of Transportation for over 20 years, retiring in 1986.

He leaves a son, John Moniz of Warren; a grandson, Kevin J. Moniz of Tiverton; and a sister, Theresa Medeiros of Westport. He was father of the late David Moniz and brother of the late Manuel Moniz, Frank Moniz, Joseph Moniz, Mary Moniz, Rose Enos and Sylvania Moniz.

His funeral was held on Saturday, May 10, from the Connors Funeral Home, Portsmouth, with a Mass of Christian Burial at in St. Anthony's Church, Portsmouth. Burial was in Newport Memorial Park, Middletown.

Donations in his memory may be made to the R.I. Veterans Home, Activities Department on Ward N2, 480 Metacom Avenue Bristol, RI 02809 or to the Forest Farm Adult Day Care Center, 193 Forest Avenue Middletown, RI 02842.
