SHS Roundup: Boys' tennis wins, baseball loses, softball wins

The Seekonk High School boys' tennis team captured its first win of the season, a 3-2 decision over Fairhaven Wednesday afternoon, May 7. Meanwhile, the Warriors dropped an 11-9 decision to the Blue Devils in baseball, but got the better of Fairhaven in softball, 5-3.

Ricky Silva, Nathan Rochefort and Steve Rijo and Steve Gadbois picked up the points for the Warriors in their first boys' tennis victory of the year, improving the locals' record to 1-7. Silva was 6-0, 6-0 winner at first singles. Rochefort won his match at third singles, 1-and-2. Gadbois and Rijo won the first set of their second doubles match, 6-3, lost the second in a tiebreaker then won a pro-set third (10-6) as darkness approached.

"They were pumped up. They were excited. It was fun to win one," said SHS head coach Richard Silva.

The Warriors are slated to host Case in their next outing, May 9.

In baseball, Seekonk scored twice in the top of the first inning on the road against the Blue Devils courtesy of a Jeff Olson two-run homer. Fairhaven, however, scored seven times in the bottom of the first on six hits and two walks by Warriors' starter Jay DeMelo, who lasted just 2/3s on an inning and took the loss.

The Blue Devils added another run in the second and three more in the third to eventually build an 11-4 lead. Seekonk scored twice in the third and offered up a five-run rally in the seventh, including a Cody Callahan three-run shot, before falling short. Bobby Jeannotte and Alex Lyman each chipped in two hits for the locals, who fell to 8-4 overall and 6-4 in the South Coast Conference with the loss.

"We've got to come back like we have all season," said SHS head coach Dave Hanson, who's Warriors have yet to lose two games in a row. "We can't afford to lose two in a row heading into the weekend."

Seekonk hosts Greater New Bedford Voc Thursday afternoon, May 8, at 3:30 p.m.

In town at Cole Street, Seekonk defeated the visiting Blue Devils, 5-3, in a SCC softball contest.

All of the scoring took place in the first three innings. Fairhaven scored twice in the top of the first, but the Warriors answered with three in the bottom of the frame. Lauren Correia scored on Kelsey Killian's fielder's choice. Killian and Lauren Medeiros eventually came around on Krista Chauvin rocket down the third base line.

Fairhaven used a walk and an error to plate the tying run in the second. Seekonk went back on top for keeps in the home half. Winning pitcher Brianne Nolette drew a walk. Danielle Nolette was hit by a pitch. And Chelsea Correia reached on an error, allowing Brianne Nolette to score. In the third, the Warriors added another as Chauvin led off with single and stole second. Samantha Howarth walked. Chauvin then scored on Brianne Nolette's fielder's choice.

Nolette finished her winning effort in the circle with six strikeouts in seven innings pitched. She allowed seven hits and the Warriors made three errors in the field.

Seekonk improved to 8-3 overall, 7-3 in the SCC, and can clinch a spot in the upcoming Division Two South Sectional Tournament with a victory on the road this afternoon in New Bedford against Voc.

"One more win and we're in," said SHS head coach Gary Miller. "If we (beat Voc) we're in states. Hopefully we get the win and do well rest of way."
