Community swings into fund-raising mode

The youth programs offered at the Martin Luther King Community Center (MLKCC) were the focus for those who attended last week's "Swing into Spring" annual fund-raiser for the MLKCC.

Amanda Frye Leinhos, executive director, opened the night with a moving message about the center's early school care program that help children "start the day out right" and the successes of the MLKCC Teen Center.

"Ask any of our teens," Ms. Leinhos cheered, "Everyone graduates and on time. One hundred percent — that's non-negotiable for teens who come to the center once a week."

The enthusiasm and efforts of the organization's board of directors and the large event committee resulted in an record attendance of nearly 280 who reached the goal to raise $50,000 for that night.

Cleverly, they actually lowered the event ticket price. "We did that so more people could attend," explained Liz Drayton, event chairperson. Stuart McNaught, co-president of the board, also acknowledged that, "There is a greater need than ever before. The community really showed their rousing support and chipped in where it was needed."

Ms. Drayton extended many thank-yous; topping her list was Peter Kyrakidas, owner of the Atlantic Beach Club for his special generosity, to all the musicians who provided the evening's "swing," to Tim Banks, owner of Waters Edge Flowers for the floral arrangements, and all the other businesses that donated so generously.

If you want to know more or still want to help, contact the MLKCC at mlkcenter.org or call 846-4828. They'll be happy to tell you about the upcoming April college tour trip or any of their other programs.
