New developments in Easter brawl

EAST PROVIDENCE — The four people arrested on charges surrounding a 15 to 20 person brawl that left one woman stabbed at Bullocks Point Village on Sunday afternoon were released on bail on Monday.

Diana Villafane, 45, of 243 Providence Ave., Angel Villafane, 57, of 610 Bullocks Point Road, their daughter Diana Villafane, 27, of Pawtucket and her sister Sharon Vazquez, 25, of 23 Sunset Ave. all pled not guilty at their sixth district court arraignments; the two Dianas face disorderly conduct charges and Mr. Villafane and Ms. Vazquez face disorderly conduct and simple assault charges. Their pre-trial date is scheduled for April 15.

Police reports say the stabbed victim, Megan Nunez, 23, who was transported from the brawl scene via rescue to Rhode Island Hospital in Providence, cussed out officers in her critical care room when they questioned her about what happened in the fight.

Patrolman Jeffrey Mace reported he heard Ms. Nunez say, "I [explatived] her up, didn't I?" to her cousin Swilda Williams of Providence.

Ms. Williams reportedly told officers she did not know what was going on, but saw the disturbance from a window at 264 Providence Ave. and not the stabbing.

Police said Ms. Nunez did not want to file a complaint at the hospital and told them to leave.

East Providence Police Lt. Stephen Enos said police cannot look into the stabbing without Ms. Nunez's filing. He said police have been actively patrolling the area since the disturbance.

What went down?

Lt. Enos said police received several calls from Bullocks Point Village by residents who complained about the large disturbance on Sunday afternoon.

According to reports, police arrived on scene shortly after they were dispatched at 12:40 p.m. and found a crowd of 10 to 15 people standing near the wounded Ms. Nunez, who sat in a chair in front of 264-266 Providence Ave. with a shirt wrapped around her right arm.

"Everyone scattered when officers got there," Lt. Enos said. "We went around the neighborhood, but people said they saw nothing."

About an hour later, reports say, officers followed a few leads and arrested Ms. Villafane, 27, at her mother's 243 Providence Ave. home.

One lead was the testimony of Richard Nunez, Ms. Nunez's brother, who reportedly told Patrolman Brian Lundstrom that "Biggy and his girlfriend Diana 'Did all this.'" Mr. Nunez reportedly told Patrolman Lundstrom, "You better arrest people or there is going to be big problems tonight."

Patrolman Lundstrom reported another person outside, Scott Sutton, said, "This is not going to be the end of this."

Reports say Ms. Villafane, 27, had a bloody nose and a "fresh scratch" on her neck. Patrolman Lundstrom reported she said the marks were from wrestling with her sister a few days earlier. He reported she denied fighting with Ms. Nunez and said they had nothing more than a verbal phone argument a few days prior. Patrolman Lundstrom reported his superiors told him to bring Ms. Villafane, 27, to the station for questioning.

Reports say she was processed, interviewed by detectives, later charged with disorderly conduct and held overnight.

The others charged

Lt. Enos said at 2:44 p.m., about 1.5 hours into Ms. Villafane's questioning, police received another call of an assault at the Bullocks Point Village. He said the call came from a 30-year-old woman and her 29-year-old husband, who said Mr. Villafane and Ms. Vazquez pounded on their door and physically assaulted them, because they thought they were the people who called police after the stabbing.

"[The woman] said they saw her on the phone with a family member, when rushed outside to pull out her 6-year-old step son, who got knocked down during the fight," Lt. Enos said. "We got calls from all over."

Lt. Enos said the couple pointed out Mr. Villafane and Ms. Vazquez, who allegedly assaulted them, and then Diana Villafane, 45, who the woman said she saw bring a knife into the original brawl. He said all three were arrested and held at the station overnight.
