NEWPORT - Sixty classic boats from the past century hit the waters of Narragansett Bay for Museum of Yachting's 25th Annual Classic Yacht Regatta Saturday. Beautiful weather greeted the equally elegant boats as they separated into 11 classes for racing in the bay.
David Ray's Nirvana won the Atlantic Trophy for best elapsed time in fleet. The Sappho Trophy for best corrected time went to Joe Loughborough's Belle. Glenn Kim's Bagatelle was the first gaff rigged boat and took home the Leiter Cup. The first cruising class yacht to finish was Gallant. Designer awards were also presented to first in fleet finishers: Nirvana (Alden), Bagatelle (Herreshoff), Take Five (Hunt), Piera (Rhodes), and Siren (Sparkman and Stephens).
On Sunday, 30 members of the fleet took to the water again for a parade through Newport Harbor. Rum Runner, carrying John Moitoza's Dixieland Band as well as the parade judges, led the procession around the harbor. Parece won the award for best costumes, while White Wings was most patriotic, Fawan was best power boat, Chips was best sailboat and Bolero took home awards for most colorful and best overall.
The parade was followed by a race around Conanicut Island.
