Tiverton man charged in cocaine bust

TIVERTON — Christopher J. O'Donnell, 28, of 2563 Main Road, was charged with possession of more than one ounce of cocaine with intent to deliver, possession of marijuana and possession of steroids and other controlled substances on Wednesday, April 14 after a two-month investigation that involved Tiverton, Barrington and East Providence Police.

Mr. O'Donnell's arrest was connected to the arrest of Dana Wood, 25, of 7 Hazelton Road in Barrington, who was arrested on Thursday, April 15 after police searched his home and found 390 grams of cocaine, a 9mm handgun, steroids, prescription pills, a small amount of marijuana and assorted drug paraphernalia.

The cocaine bust of Mr. Wood was one of the largest in the last 25 years by the Barrington Police Department. It has an estimated street value of $60,000.

Mr. Wood and Mr. O'Donnell "were associates of each other," according to Tiverton Police Deputy Chief Nicholas Maltais.

Two months ago, information that Mr. O'Donnell was allegedly selling cocaine from a townhouse as 658 Windwood Drive was provided to Tiverton Detective Sergeant Patrick Jones by the Barrington and East Providence Police departments.

Surveillance of Mr. O'Donnell was done by Sgt. Jones and Detective Michael Carr over the last two months.

On Wednesday, April 14, Sgt. Jones obtained search warrants to search the townhouse, as well as Mr. O'Donnell's 2002 Jeep Grand Cherokee. At approximately 5 p.m., Mr. O'Donnell was observed operating his Jeep on Stafford Road a short distance from Windwood Drive. His vehicle was stopped by Detective Carr, Patrolman James McGinnis-Rossi and Patrolman Daniel Raymond.

During a check of his vehicle, a small amount of marijuana was observed in the center console of his vehicle. Mr. O'Donnell was taken into custody and his vehicle was transported to the Tiverton police station where it was searched.

Police found a shaving kit under Mr. O'Donnell's rear passenger seat containing more than one ounce of cocaine with a street value of $1,200, various drug paraphernalia, vials of anabolic steroids and other growth enhancers.

The townhouse on Windwood Drive was also searched by police, who were assisted by canine units from Dartmouth.

"This was an excellent job showing a cooperative effort not only between the detective and uniform divisions in this department, but also between the Tiverton police officers and those in Barrington and East Providence," Deputy Chief Maltais said.

Mr. O'Donnell was held overnight and arraigned on Thursday, April 15 in District Court before Judge Walter Gorman. He was held without bail.

This was Mr. O'Donnell's first offense. If convicted of all charges he faces up to 10 years in prison.
