BRISTOL - Roger Williams University surveillance led to the arrest of an employee believed to have been stealing from the university since March.
William A. Parmlee, 32, of East Providence, was arrested after Bristol Detective John Ferreira and East Providence Police searched his home earlier this week.
On Aug. 21, Mr. Parmlee was recorded on campus surveillance removing a laptop computer. The university brought the video to Bristol Police, who had already taken reports for more than $30,000 worth of stolen goods dating back six months ago. The thefts occurred late in the evening, as computers and janitorial equipment were taken from locked rooms.
"Everything had been stolen from a locked classroom, closet, or lab so very quickly we knew we were dealing with someone who had access," said Bristol Police Lt. Nick Guercia.
Back in March, a safe containing $700 and event tickets, was taken from the Campus Programs office. The emptied safe was uncovered at Mr. Parmlee's home. But little else has been recovered, Lt. Guercia said. He said at least five laptop or desktop computers were taken over the six-month period along with cleaning equipment.
Mr. Parmlee was employed as a university custodian at the time of the larcenies. The university declined comment on Mr. Parmlee's employment.
"It is Roger Williams University policy not to comment on matters either involving police investigations or personnel decisions which are confidential in nature," said the university's Director of Public Safety Brendan Doherty in a statement issued earlier this week.
Mr. Parmlee was charged with the larceny of more than $500. According to Lt. Guercia, once other items are recovered additional charges may follow.
