WARREN - A sure sign of approaching fall is the ubiquitous chrysanthemum. There will be over 30,000 mums on display this weekend at the 10th annual Mum & Fall Flower Festival at Frerichs Farm, 65 Kinnicutt Ave. Hours are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 11 and 12.
The annual parade of color also features pony and horse rides, pumpkin coach rides, a two-acre corn maze, pick-your-own pumpkin patches (including the Charlie Brown Sugar Pumpkin Patch for toddlers), demonstrations of container planting both days, and local artist Richard Kaiser, who will be on hand with his artwork.
The Giant Pumpkin Drop will take place at noon both days. Everyone can gather to watch a 60-foot crane lift a 200- to 300-pound pumpkin for the popular drop.
Windy River Junction, a little town by the river, will be open for visitors. Mr. Kaiser created the Olde West Main Street scene, which was a big hit last year. The town has a jail, saloon and a bank, where youngsters can pan for gold. The town offers great photo opportunities. Take a Wanted Poster mugshot at the jail or stock up on candy and other treats at Friendly Dave's General Store.
Admission is free and rides are free (except for the pony and horse rides).
The farm also will be offering Flashlight Nights on Fridays again in September and October. For more information on this and other upcoming events, including the annual Pumpkin Weigh-Off in October, visit www.frerichsfarm.com.
