WESTPORT - Cecil Blackman, 19, of Patterson Avenue, Brockton, and Derek Reis,19, Pine Tree Lane, Abington were charged with racing and operating to endanger following an accident on Saturday, Sept. 4.
The accident occurred at about 11 p.m. in the area of 327 State Road. Police said the occupants of both vehicles knew each other.
When the police arrived, they found a 15-year-old girl lying next to a 1995 Jeep Cherokee. They said she appeared to have been ejected during the crash. Westport firefighters used the Jaws of Life to remove another 15-year-old girl who was trapped inside, working for nearly an hour to free her leg from the wreck.
The driver of the Jeep, Mr. Blackman, was also injured. All injured victims were taken to area hospitals, including St. Anne's, Charlton Memorial and Hasbro. A 12-year-old girl who was also inside the Jeep was not seriously injured.
Police said Mr. Reis, who was driving a Subaru, was racing the Jeep Cherokee when the Jeep lost control. The Jeep, which was headed westbound on Route 6, skidded sideways for about 96 feet when it went airborne for 26 feet and struck a telephone pole with its windshield. The impact propelled the Jeep another 20 feet until it came to a stop in a nearby embankment.
When the Jeep hit the pole, it also caused a downed power line on the road. Another motorist, who witnessed the crash, struck the downed power line, causing damage to this motorist's vehicle.
Power was shut off in the area until a severed power line was reattached. Traffic was diverted for nearly four hours with the assistance of Mass Highway and state police.
Mr. Reis and Mr. Blackman were both charged with racing a motor vehicle and operating to endanger. Mr. Blackman was also charged with driving with a suspended license. The incident remains under investigation by Officer Todd Oliver.
