Barrington Police seize $60,000 of cocaine

BARRINGTON - A long-term investigation by Barrington and East Providence police officers led to one of the largest cocaine seizures in Barrington history last week. Barrington Police, after working with the East Providence Police Vice Unit, drafted a search warrant for 7 Hazelton Road in Barrington and executed a search with East Providence officials on Thursday, April 15.

Inside the residence, officials found and seized 390 grams of cocaine, a 9mm handgun, steroids, prescription pills, a small amount of marijuana and assorted drug paraphernalia.

Barrington then charged Dana Wood, 25, of 7 Hazelton Road with cocaine possession with intent to deliver, possessing a handgun while committing a crime of violence and possession of marijuana. He was arraigned at 6th District Court, ordered held without bail by Judge Higgins, and remanded to the ACI until Thursday, April 29, for a bail hearing.

Barrington Police seized a 9mm handgun and 390 grams of cocaine from a Barrington home.

Barrington Police Chief John LaCross said Mr. Wood was taken into custody without incident.

According to the police report, the cocaine bust, which seized nearly half a kilogram, was one of the largest in the last 25 years by the Barrington Police Department. It has an estimated street value of $60,000.

"Even East Providence Vice said they had a couple good scores and this was a substantially large one, even for East Providence," Chief LaCross said.

In November 2003, the East Providence Police Vice Unit, led by Sgt. Thomas Rush, and investigators Karl Jacobson and Patrick Connaty, began an investigation in their town. The work eventually led to two separate arrests. Barrington police got involved when Mr. Wood moved to 7 Hazelton Road in Barrington. Barrington Police Det. Sgt. Dino DeCrescenzo and Det. Josh Birrell had been working surveillance operations for the last four weeks.

"We don't have any indication that Mr. Wood was selling to people in Barrington," Chief LaCross said. "He's a transient."

Meanwhile, Tiverton police, working with information from the East Providence Vice Unit, last week arrested Christopher J. O'Donnell, 28, of 2563 Main St., Tiverton, and charged him with posession of cocaine with intent to deliver, possession of marijuana and possession of a controlled substance, steroids.

"The Tiverton arrest was related, to what degree I can't speak on that," Chief LaCross said.

The chief said he was happy to see the Barrington and East Providence police work together to make the arrest.

"The success of this lengthy investigation is attributed to the inter-agency cooperation between members of the East Providence Vice Unit and members of the Barrington Police Department and their dedication to duty," he said.
