Winter Walk at Melville Park in Portsmouth Saturday

Posted

PORTSMOUTH — The Melville Park Committee will sponsor its sixth annual Winter Walk through the woods and around the ponds and streams of Melville Park on Saturday, March 1.

There will be a 1.75-mile “Medallion Walk” and leisurely guided nature tours, depending on the participant’s interest.

Both events are free. Registration for the Medallion Walk begins at 1 p.m. and all walkers must be on the course by 2 p.m. Registration for the Medallion Walk will be at the park near the “Ski Lodge” (block house).

Walkers will be given a course map and they will come upon three checkpoints staffed by local Boy Scouts who will stamp and initial each walker’s card. At the end of the course, the first 75 walkers to successfully complete all four stages will receive a commemorative medallion with ribbon.

Guided walking tours exploring the history and beauty of the park will begin at 1:30 p.m.

Melville Park is off of West Main Road, a third of a mile behind Melville Elementary School (follow signs). There will be free coffee, hot chocolate and snacks for participants. Wear appropriate footwear for unimproved nature trails in winter condition.
