White Church Bridge closed periodically to westbound traffic

All motorists looking to cross the White Church Bridge from Massasoit Avenue toward County Road were being turned back on Wednesday morning, Oct. 2.

The partial closure followed a full bridge closure Tuesday night into Wednesday morning. Crews started work Tuesday night at about 8 p.m., installing median barriers atop the 74 year-old span that is officially known as the Central Bridge.

Officials from the Rhode Island Department of Transportation reported that prior to the bridge closure Tuesday night, alternating traffic would be allowed.

The bridge will be closed to all westbound traffic Wednesday through Friday, Oct. 2 to 4, from 9 a.m to 3 p.m. Prior to, and following that work period (from 3 p.m. to 9 a.m.), traffic will be able to pass over the bridge in both directions.

On Wednesday, a Barrington police officer stationed near the intersection of Massasoit Avenue and Martin Avenue was telling drivers heading west on Massasoit that they could not cross the bridge.

A bridge closed sign sure would be better at Massasoit and New Meadow. Drivers could detour instead of letting them drive all the way down just to turn back.
