PORTSMOUTH — The town wants to know what you think of the possible regulation — or outright ban — of single-use plastic bags in Portsmouth.
The nonprofit group Clean Ocean Access (COA) first asked the Town Council to draft an ordinance banning such bags in August 2016, saying they cause great damage to the environment, particularly to ocean life.
In August of this year, the council voted 6-1 to ask Town Administrator Richard Rainer Jr. to work with COA and local business leaders in drafting an ordinance that would ban the single-use carryout bags and bring it back to the council for a vote at a future date.
As part of the process, the town has issued an online survey to gather citizens’ input on the topic. The short survey can be completed at www.surveymonkey.com/r/PortsmouthPlasticBags. A link is also available on the town website at www.Portsmouthri.com.
Residents who would prefer to complete the survey manually can download the survey from the town website or obtain one at the town clerk’s office. Completed copy’s can be either mailed or hand-deliver to the clerk’s office at Town Hall, 2200 East Main Road, or faxed to 683-0573.
