Westport Middle School girls finish season at 16-2

The Westport Middle School girls basketball team school recorded 16 wins in the recently completed season.  

The team won the Massasoit League Southern Division title but lost one game to undefeated Norton in the Northern Division. Westport has won the title four of the last seven years with Norton taking the other three championships in the 17-team  league.

Over the past seven years under coach Greg Brien the team record is 117-12. He has been assisted by John “Red” Cummings. The team graduates nine players this year but has a strong group returning for the 2014-15 season.

Team members this season: Captains - Sydney Oliviera, Mollie Duclos, Madison Burt and Katherine Yeagin. Other eighth graders are Sidney Amaral, Lindsay Berube, Emily Costa , Jordyn Jasparro, Mary McGuill, Avery and Elizabeth Raposa: Returning players are Leah Fellows, Sierra Majewski, Lindsay Oliviera, Annie MacMaster, Ashlyn Silvia, Lauren Valentine, Burt and Yeargin.

Jim McGaw

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986. He's worked two different stints at East Bay Newspapers, for a total of 18 years with the company so far. When not running all over town bringing you the news from Portsmouth, Jim listens to lots and lots and lots of music, watches obscure silent films from the '20s and usually has three books going at once. He also loves to cook crazy New Orleans dishes for his wife of 25 years, Michelle, and their two sons, Jake and Max.
