Westport Fair: A steamy summer treat

Posted

Westport's annual five-day tribute to the old-fashioned New England country fair played out for the 58th time last Wednesday through Sunday on the Pine Hill Road fairgrounds.

Despite baking heat in the daytime sun and sultry evenings, throngs turned out for the rides, Goat Ropers (the band), racing pigs, cotton candy and roaring tractors that are the mainstays of this South Coast summer highlight.

As always it was a chance for area farmers and cooks to show off their talents — tables were loaded with fresh vegetables, pies, cakes and more.

Organizers say they raised enough money to pay for the fair, set plans in motion for next year's 59th edition, and provide support for local scholarships and other worthy causes.

This year's fair dedicated to the late Charles A. Costa, longtime Westport Fair organizer, selectman, volunteer firefighter and former Westport Man of the Year.
