Comedy duo have recorded podcast out of Warren for eight years; live taping of 300th episode is Sunday at Fete

On the surface, comedians Chuck Staton and Brad Rohrer couldn’t be more different. Chuck is a Warren guy with roots here, Brad is a transplant from the Midwest. Chuck loves restaurants, Brad admit’s he’s more into “bland, unimaginative” food that he can trust. Chuck’s humor is over the top, Brad is (seemingly) the straight conservative guy.
But together they click, and most of it is on tape. On Sunday night, May 7, the friends will host a live taping of their 300th podcast, “Agreeing to Disagree: The Chuck and Brad Podcast,” at the Fete Music Hall in Providence. The doors open at 7 p.m.
The two have been recording “Agreeing to Disagree” out of Chuck’s Main Street home, one door south of St. Alexander’s Church, for eight years, though they moved for a while after a house fire. The show focuses on music, movies, books, games and pop culture, and the two are big boosters of Rhode Island’s music and arts scene. Chuck plays in the punk band Senior Discount, and Brad is a member of the Providence Improv Guild.
“Because Brad is in the improv scene and I have the music scene, the majority of the stuff is our experiences as artists,” Chuck said.
“We really get to break things down and explore them on the show. And it’s a venue for all kinds of stuff.”
The two met when Senior Discount started making short videos to promote the band and their shows. Some of those videos are practical jokes — putting 300 pumpkins in a friend’s bedroom for Halloween, plastering an unflattering picture of a Senior Discount friend on a giant banner and hanging it from the second floor of the Staton home at Christmas, and running a rigged mayonnaise eating contest (they secretly gave their preferred contestant yogurt instead of mayo).
Chuck and Brad realized early on that they had plenty of material and the right attitude for a weekly podcast, and their act has been evolving ever since.
Over the years they’ve interviewed countless local bands, national acts and writers and actors. They also talk about crazy things that happen to them and pull countless pranks. Few things are off limits, and recent shows have recounted a horrific experience at Ikea, Chuck’s recent disaster at a printing and copying store, their views on the election, the merits of Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst, a dismal review of Pet Sematary II, changing technology in the gaming industry and a serious topic, how chicken fingers relate to certain male biological processes. One of their most recent podcasts included an interview with The Portuguese Kids, a nearby comedy group.
Sunday’s live taping has been in the work for months. It kicks off with three stand-up comics, and Chuck said the pair have a few surprises up their sleeve after, including a bit Brad has kept in his back pocket for years — for good reason.
“Everybody is going to be really freaked out,” Chuck said. “That’s the best way to describe it.”
Tickets are $8 in advance, $10 on the day of the show. See www.chuckandbradpodcast.com, or the pair’s Facebook page, for more information. You can also send an e-mail to chuckandbrad@gmail.com.
