Warren needs Christmas helpers


Here’s a chance to give a valuable gift this Christmas.

Volunteers led by Warren Unit #11 of the American Legion Auxiliary need help to deliver what’s expected to be a record number of holiday meals on Christmas Day. They’re being delivered to the elderly, homebound and needy in Barrington, Bristol, Warren and Riverside.

On Thanksgiving Day, volunteers prepared and delivered a record 237 meals; and another 20 people who might otherwise have eaten alone were severed their Thanksgiving meal in the hall at St. Thomas the Apostle Church, where all meals are prepared. They expect similar numbers during Christmas; in fact, if they serve 200 meals, it will be a Christmas record.

“Unfortunately, the record number of meals is a sign of the times, especially with cutbacks in the Food Stamp program,’’ said Auxiliary President Judy Fardig.

Anyone who needs a meal should call 245-5431 by Monday, Dec. 23, and leave a message. Anyone who would like to volunteer in preparing or delivering the meals, or for the cleanup that will follow, can call the same number.

Meals will be prepared on Christmas Day at St. Thomas the Apostle Church on Metacom Avenue, and delivery begins at 11:30 a.m. Unlike the Auxiliary’s Thanksgiving Day meal program, no meals will be served in the church hall on Christmas Day.

The free meals consist of ham, potatoes, string beans, pineapple/raisin gravy, roll and butter, and dessert.

As with the Thanksgiving program, the Auxiliary will be assisted by members of American Legion Post #104 of Warren, the Warren Association of Vietnam Veterans, the Combat Veterans Motorcycle Association, and volunteers from throughout the East Bay.

A lifelong Portsmouth resident, Jim graduated from Portsmouth High School in 1982 and earned a journalism degree from the University of Rhode Island in 1986.
